Goals:
  • Continued exploration of the basic functions of Garage Band
  • To understand world music instruments and how they may work in a sequencing program
  • To develop creativity by using non-standard rock band instrumentation

Requirements:
  • A musical work using Garage Band of at least 32 measures
  • Use a variety of world musical instruments.
    • Do not use drum kits, beats, guitars, bass, piano or keyboards.
  • You must use at least 8 different loops
    • Try to use instruments that may have come from the same region or country
    • Make decisions about what sounds logical and what fits together
    • Build your work to a climax, experiment with instrument volume controls for this.
Procedures:

1.  Listen to this work
  • What instrument do you hear?
  • How are does each instruments function?
  • Are the instruments melodic or rhythmic in nature?
2.  Open Garage Band (looks like a Guitar)
3.  Title your project "Mylastname Project 7".
Use the key of C and the 4/4 time signature for your project.
4.  Select where you would like to save your project.  Your own folder would be preferred.
5.  Click "Create" to continue
6.  Familiarize yourself with the layout
  • The sequencer area is in the middle of the screen
  • The controls at the bottom allow you to play and edit your composition
  • The loop function is located in the lower left hand corner.  It looks like an "eye"
7.  Begin adding loops to the sequence area by dragging the loop from the loop preview to the sequence area.

Hints:
  • Start with an instrument such as bass or drums.
  • Extend loops or find similar loops to work together.
  • Experiment with different starting points for loops.  Sometimes a work doesn't sound right, because the loops are not lined up to the measures correctly.
  • Make sure all loops that you use are in the key of C.
  • Try adding strings or horn hits for added flair!
Remember:
  • This is an experimental process.  If you don't like something you can always delete it later.
  • Your classmates are a great resource.  Something that they may have discovered may help you with one of your questions.
8.  Once you have completed your composition, you must convert your composition to iTunes. In iTunes, please select "Convert Selection to MP3" from the Advanced Menu.

9.  Find your file in iTunes (Open Apple F), and save it into the Music Tech folder.
  • Your Period
    • Project 7
10.  Begin evaluating and giving feedback for your assigned partner's project.  You will also recieve a grade for the completion of your partner's project, so give them good feedback.
