Goals:

  • Use of Finale Notepad for composing
  • Review basics of music theory (staff, notes, rhythms) from Band, Choir or piano
  • Compose a 16 measure melody for your specific instrument
    • Key of Concert Eb (band students), Key of E (Choir students), Key of G (piano)
    • The melody should center around the key center and should use compositional devices, such as sequence, repetition, diminution and augmentation
    • Use a simple form, such as AABA, ABAB, ABCA for your composition (four mesure phrases work really well)
  • Using the Audacity program in the Electronic Music Studios, record your composition.

7. When your document appears, go to the Menu Bar and select File => Save as...
Then title the project lastname pro 2a and save the file to your folder.

Always Save before class is over.
Apple-S
is the short cut for this.

To Re-open your file, Open your Folder and double click on lastname pro 2a.

8. Begin entering the notes. Begin and end with the tonic note of the key signature.

You will compose 16 measures and your composition must end on G as a half note.

You will be mainly using the
Simple Entry Palatte
to enter the notes as you see them. Use the playback controls to see how it sounds...

You may only use half notes, quarter notes and pairs of eighth notes at this point. Use a combination, but do not use rests.

Use a combination of steps and skips.
If a note skips, resolve with a step in the opposite direction.

9. When you have finished entering all the notes, you will need to delete all the extra measures.

To do this, select the mover tool (looks like a box, next to the A).

Highlight the extra measures (hold down shift to select more than one) and then use the delete key on the keyboard.

10. Add at least four dynamic changes to your composition. To do this select the accent tool.

forte = loud
piano = soft
