Goals:

  • Beginning use of Finale Notepad for composing
  • Review basics of music theory (staff, notes, rhythms)
  • Compose an original 8 measure melody

Requirements: Compose an original 8 measure melody

    • Key of G major
    • 4/4 time signature
    • 8 measures in length
    • Use only the notes G, A, B, C & D on the staff
    • Melody starts and ends on the note "G"
    • Use Half Notes, Quarter Notes, and Pairs of Eighth Notes
    • Use one rest at the end of the 4th measure to create a "Phrase"
    • Add at least two "Dynamic" changes (forte = loud, piano = soft)

Rubric:

Proper use of notes and rhythms           10        8        6        4        2        0
    Add dynamics to notate volume
Melody uses combinations of rhythmic values

Examples (Do not copy one of these projects, they are examples):

A Project
A Project 2
Melody starts and ends on G. Good use of dynamics. Uses only one rest at the end of the fourth measure (creates a phrase). Most notes move in stepwise motion (not a lot of jumping around).

C Project
Pro 2 C Project
Melody starts on G, but ends on B. Only one dynamic at beginning of the piece. Notice the incomplete measures 2 & 3 and how they are filled with extra rests at the end of each measure.
